Iris Mittenaere from France was crowned the new Miss Universe 2016 on Sunday, January 30th in the Philippines live on Fox.
Iris Mittenaere is a 23 year old, dental surgery student. She hopes to be an advocate for dental and oral hygiene during her year.
Iris competed against 85 women all hoping to become to become the next Miss Universe. The pageant consisted of 3 categories: Swimsuit, Evening Gown & On-Stage interview. All contestants also participated in interviews with a panel of judges before the final pageant night.
Steve Harvey was this year host, and did not shy away from last years embarrassing mistake of announcing the wrong winner on live TV. He made several jokes throughout the evening, poking fun at himself. A clip of last years crowning moment played "Who the hell thought it was a good idea to replay that ?" said Steve.
Supermodel Ashley Graham was the backstage correspondent for the evenings event. She interviewed contestants as they were running backstage to change and she spoke on the importance of being confident with your body. "What do you do when you look in the mirror, do you have words of affirmation to get yourself psyched up " Ashley Graham asked Sierra Bearchell. "Because not everyone is as comfortable in their skin as maybe the two of us are."
Iris Mittenaere, will spend her year living in New York City, making appearances, volunteering , traveling , modeling, and promoting philanthropic causes.
